We made Oobleck! a substance made out of cornstarch and water, In this lab we had to decide whether Oobleck was solid or liquid. We determined the differences between solids and liquids. Liquids : Can spill or drip, changes shape but not volume, and more sensitive to movement. Solids : Doesn't change form, makes noise(resonant frequency), and less sensitive to movement. We also learned about the molecules, with solids the molecules are more condensed and with the liquid the molecules are more flowing and less condensed. When making the Oobleck we had to mix cornstarch and water in an approximate ratio of 1:1.75. When I played with the Oobleck I observed that the substance had more liquid qualities than solid qualities. The Oobleck didn't change in volume but it did in shape, it spilled and it dripped, But it wasn't that sensitive to movement. I used A spoon to test if it changed shape and my hands to move it around. My conclusion is that Oobleck is actually a liquid. The reason it think this is a liquid substance is because of the quality it posses like how your hand can go threw it ect... |
